Whilst many accountancy practices make taking out cover compulsory, or simply include the cost of the cover in their fees, Clark Hearsey have always given clients the choice.
Although we often advise clients in specific sectors that they are at high risk, particularly if HMRC have a purge on, for example, restaurants or plumbers, it is important to remember that HMRC do carry out random investigations.
We cannot prevent HMRC from selecting you for an enquiry, but we can help minimise the impact by dealing with HMRC on your behalf. Our tax investigations service covers the professional fees incurred when providing you with a full defence, should you be targeted. We strongly recommend you subscribe, as even the most routine tax investigation can lead to substantial fees – even if no additional tax is found to be due.
The average enquiry can now last up to 24 months as HMRC strive to restore normal working practices, having recruited new compliance staff and redeployed staff back into routine compliance activities.
We partner with Markel Tax, who have an excellent reputation within the accountancy profession, to offer you a market-leading tax investigations service. Whether it’s a cross-tax enquiry, a technical challenge or a detailed books and records review, our tax investigations package is designed to achieve the best possible result for you.
An additional benefit of the cover is that you will also have expert legal support when you need it most, with access to our 24/7 Business Legal Helpline and free access to Business Hub, assisting you with everyday legal issues.
The service runs on an annual basis, renewing on 1 October each year, although you can join mid-term.
The cost for the 2024/25 year is £200 plus VAT. VAT registered businesses can reclaim the VAT element of their fee on their next VAT return.
